BRIDGE OVER IRISES: Original, Limited-Edition, Giclée Print (unframed)
Zigzag shapes frame a man with his back toward us, crouching down in full concentration as he barely touches the water of a narrow canal, sending out circles of ripples. He is bracketed by the angles of a wooden foot bridge and it's reflection beyond him, the sides of the canal on either side of him, and a triangle of blooming iris plants in the foreground. This is an original, fine art, giclée print in a limited edition, created and hand-signed by me Loren Friesen.

PROCESS OF CREATING BRIDGE OVER IRISES:
Based on my photo sources, I captured a slide of this man absorbed in his task in one camera shot. I projected this slide onto paper and traced the image with pencil, then painted it with pastels. Raising the top of the painting enabled me to add more planks to the bridge, significantly improving the composition of the painting. My projector has a 6-1/2 x 6-1/2 inch (16 x 16 cm) screen on it, which allowed me to look at the slide as I was painting. I also ordered a blown up photo of the slide to paint from. As with my other pastel paintings, I used a set of about 120 Rembrandt Soft Pastels that I purchased individually in order to get the exact colors that I needed–only using colors with a high color-fast rating. My set is made up of about 25 individual colors, most with a gradation of 4 to 6 tints (lighter) and shades (darker)–so one color has pastel sticks from light to dark. This allowed me to paint the highlights and shadows and everything in between with very little mixing of the pastels. This kept the colors looking fresh. Pastel sticks get blunt quickly when used, so I used a razor blade to frequently shave off the rounded tip (in a motion like slicing a carrot). This kept the circular edge of the pastel sharp so as to be able to paint precise details. I did not smear the pastels because I learned early that my paintings looked fresher if I did not obliterate the pastel marks and strokes. This surface texture is an important feature of my pastel paintings, so I put a lot of effort into maintaining that texture when I made changes on my giclée prints. Soft Pastels are very fragile, so they break easily. To prevent this I wrapped each pastel in tape. Some time after completing the pastel painting, I took a digital photo of it, brought it into Photoshop and reworked the picture to create this giclée print.
