QUIET WATERS: Original, Limited-Edition, Giclée Print (unframed)
Artistically balanced rocks and trees frame an expanse of water and sky, stretching from you to the horizon–creating a serene space that draws you in. In the distance four boys are quietly absorbed in exploring the pond. They are surrounded by a beautiful palette of greens, browns and bluish-greens. This is an original, fine art, giclée print in a limited edition, created and hand-signed by me Loren Friesen.

PROCESS OF CREATING QUIET WATERS:
I took photographs of boys playing in this pond at beautiful Showa Memorial Park, one of my favorite places near where I lived in western Tokyo. I traced parts of 4 of these photos and added some invention to create a pencil sketch for a painting. A slide of this sketch was projected onto a small panel and traced in pencil. Then I painted an oil painting using the photos as sources. This small painting led to a large oil commission, also painted from the photos. Then I digitally photographed this large painting in 2 halves, imported them into Photoshop, spliced the 2 halves together and created this giclée print. I made many adjustments in Photoshop over the course of about 2-1/2 years, printing many states (intermediate prints) along the way. This was to see how the decisions that I made on my computer screen would actually look on paper. These decisions were not based on the original photos, but on what I sensed the giclée print itself required.
At the beginning of creating a piece of art, I am driving the process and deciding what the picture should look like. I am guiding it. But as the picture develops, it increasingly "tells" me what to do–it is increasingly guiding me! The "voice" of the artwork is especially strong near the end. Discerning what it is "saying" is a critical challenge–and responding to what I am "hearing" is often very difficult. When I hear no more "complaints," the picture is finished!
