TAXIS: Original, Limited-Edition, Giclée Print (unframed)

SKU: 6

At a busy square in front of Tachikawa station in western Tokyo, filled with taxis, busses, buildings, people, trees–and myriad lines, angles and shapes–3 taxi drivers are engaged in a conversation while waiting for their next customers. This complex composition is an original, fine art, giclée print in a limited edition, created and hand-signed by me Loren Friesen.

    PROCESS OF CREATING TAXIS:

I chose 3 of the many photos I took at the square in front of Tachikawa Station in western Tokyo, and traced parts of them to create a small, pencil sketch. After projecting a slide of this sketch onto a small panel, I traced it in pencil, and used the photos as a source to make the oil painting Taxis. Later, I brought a digital scan of this painting into Photoshop to create the giclée print that you see here. The next 14 years were a technical and artistic learning process–upgrading my computer and printer, matching the colors  that were on the computer screen with what came out of the printer, experimenting with different print papers–and making extensive changes to the artistic quality of this print. (Of course, other prints were also being worked on during this time). One of the early tasks was cleaning up the distortions that a camera often causes in the perspective of a scene–such as the distortions that you see in selfies, though not as extreme. Vertical, horizontal and perspective lines were skewed and needed to be realigned. A long-term task was becoming more skillful at carrying out the 4 basic steps of solving problems in a piece of art: (1) sensing or noticing that there is a problem; (2) clearly identifying what the problem is; (3) figuring out a solution to the problem; and (4) executing the solution. Any or all of these steps can be difficult, but identifying where one is in the process can be clarifying and encouraging. It is easy to have a distorted or overly optimistic view of one's own work. So, from time to time, looking at the artwork in a mirror, or turning it upside down, or not looking at it for a couple weeks before relooking at it are all ways of jarring one's customary viewpoint and seeing the work more accurately. Or asking someone if they see anything in the artwork that looks strange or awkward can be helpful. There were a handful of times along the way when I thought that this print was finished, but later I would sense something wrong somewhere (Step 1 again), and the process of  growth would continued. After many adjustments to individual parts–mostly to their color saturation (intensity of hue) and/or color value (dark and light)–Taxis is finished. To me, the fascinating thing about this giclée print is the complexity of its composition.

    PACKAGING FOR SHIPPING:

DO NOT try to take the curl out of the paper by bending it the other way. You could easily buckle the paper and put a crease in it.
