FARMERS: Original, Limited-Edition, Giclée Print (unframed)
Soft shafts of light and long rows of plants bracket a farmer and his wife in their field diligently fertilizing each plant under a cloudy sky and distant, hazy mountains. This is an original, fine art, giclée print in a limited edition, created and hand-signed by me Loren Friesen.

PROCESS OF CREATING FARMERS:
When walking past small farms scattered within my neighborhood in western Tokyo, I was drawn to this farm-couple silently tending their crops. I took a series of photographs with my film camera, traced parts of about 5 of these photos, added some invention, and created a small pencil sketch for a painting. I projected a slide of this sketch onto a small panel and traced it. Then the photographs became the source for making a small oil painting. To aid in this process I ordered lighter versions of a couple of these photographs from a photo studio. These lighter prints showed hidden details in the dark areas of the photographs such as the evergreens and the farmer's shoes and shirt. Some time later a client ordered a larger pastel-painting of this small oil-painting. So I traced a slide of the small oil-painting onto paper. She wanted the length of the new pastel-painting extended to match one of my pastel-paintings that she had purchased earlier. So I added more sky at the top of the new artwork to make it longer. Many years later I bought this pastel-painting back from her, took a digital photo of it and imported it into Photoshop. Over the course of 4-1/2 years I made innumerable changes to create the giclée print shown above. One of those changes was to add the arch to reduce the height of the sky. These various changes were no longer based on the photographs, but were based on the compositional, psychological and aesthetic needs of the giclée print itself.
